Sugarcane produces sugar, alcohol and also electrical energy from the fibrous waste product, known as bagasse.

The fibrous residue of the sugarcane crushing process, bagasse is also an abundant source of energy.Application
Bagasse burnt in a boiler produces steam and electricity: this is co-generation. The energy produced from bagasse considerably exceeds the energy requirements of the production facilities, allowing the surplus to be sold to the network.Industrial facilities
In Brazil, Guarani is developing the co-generation of heat and power from bagasse in Cruz Alta, Andrade and Vertente, particularly through a partnership with Tractebel. In Réunion, mixed bagasse-coal fired power plants take all of the bagasse produced by the two sugar refineries (Bois-Rouge and Le Gol). These power stations produce 12% of Réunion's electricity needs.
