The Origny co-operative: birthplace of the Tereos Group
1932
Creation of co-operative distillery at Origny, driven by Jean Cavenne. At the time the majority of sugar beet co-operatives were turning to the production of alcohol, which was already being used as a fuel.
1951
Construction of a sugar factory at Origny on the initiative of Jean Duval. It has been the growth of the Origny co-operative that has gradually brought Tereos into being.
1984
Philippe Duval replaces his father to become CEO of the Origny refinery and distillery.
1987/88
Beginning of the production of liquid sugars and construction of a rectification plant. Over the years the number of co-operative members and the volume of sugar beet processed increase.
National and international growth
1990
Merger of the Origny-Sainte-Benoîte and Vic-sur-Aisne co-operatives to create Sucreries et Distilleries de l’Aisne (SDA), one of the biggest sugar beet co-operatives in France.
1991
SDA acquires the sugar factory at Berneuil.
1992
Move into the Czech Republic, first international experience, through SDA’s investment in TTD. The French co-operative owns the majority of TTD, with BERD and Nordzucker also owning stakes.
1993
Beginning of the ethanol production from wheat at Origny in partnership with cereal co-operatives at Bio-Ethanol Nord Picardie (BENP).
1993 to 1996
SDA acquires three plants : sugar factories in Maizy and Bucy and a distillery at Brie.
1996
Creation of SYRAL, working with Jugbunzlauer (Austrian industrial group specialising in fermentation products) in the Marckolsheim starch factory.
1999
SDA merges with Sucrerie-Distillerie d’Artenay. This merger of the two co-operatives produces Union SDA.
2000
Union SDA took a decisive step forward in its growth, moving into the Brazilian market in a joint venture with Cosan, a leader in sugarcane processing.
2001
Union SDA expands its sugarcane businesses through the acquisition of the Bourbon Group’s sugar factories. Union SDA thus becomes the majority shareholder in Sucrerie de Bois Rouge (51%) and the Eurocanne packaging company (51%), and takes significant stakes in the Savanna distillery (44%) and in Loiret Haëntjens (39%).
The creation of the Tereos Group
2002
Acquisition of Béghin-Say’s sugar factories. Béghin-Say’s agricultural suppliers join Union SDA, creating co-operatives which come together to form Union BS. Union SDA and Union BS are now merged into the co-operative group Tereos.
2003
The group makes a step change in scale, with 9,500 co-operative famer members. The number of refineries/distilleries for sugar beet in France increases from 5 to 10. The Béghin-Say consumer brand and the Brazilian company Guarani become part of the group. To recognise these changes, the group adopts the Tereos name and gives itself a new corporate identity.
2004
Acquisition of Sodes, a company based in Lillebonne specialised in the production of synthetic alcohol, through its BENP subsidiary. The group creates BENP Lillebonne (in partnership with cereal growing co-operatives), a wheat ethanol production facility that began activity in 2007.
2006
Tereos merges with the sugar beet co-operative Sucreries et Distilleries des Hauts de France, the leader in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Tereos adds a further three sugar factories in France (Lillers, Attin, Abbeville).
Tereos expands into Mozambique to produce and process sugarcane.
2007
Acquisition, through the SYRAL subsidiary and in partnership with cereal co-operatives, of five starch and glucose factories from Tate & Lyle. Tereos becomes Europe’s third largest starch producer.
IPO of Guarani, the Brazilian subsidiary, which is listed on BM&F Bovespa, the Sao Paulo stock exchange.
2008: signature of a marketing and industrial agreement between Tereos and Spanish agricultural co-operative Acor. Construction of a refinery on the Acor site in Olmedo to process, amongst other things, sugar produced by Tereos on Réunion.
The birth of Tereos Internacional
2010
Acquisition of the Réunion-based assets of Quartier Français. Tereos will own all sugar cane processing facilities on the island.
Creation of Tereos Internacional, a Brazilian company in which Tereos is the majority shareholder, bringing together all sugarcane and cereal processing businesses.
April 2010, partnership between Guarani, a subsidiary of Tereos Internacional, and Petrobras, the leading Brazilian energy company. Acquisition of factories in Vertente and Mandu by Guarani in Brazil.
